Is mold causing our coughs in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the weather got more humid, and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We live in an older villa in Jumeirah and it feels damp all the time. Could this mold be the reason my family is getting sick, and what’s the first thing I should do to clean it up safely?

The mold you found is very likely contributing to your family's coughs, especially in Dubai's humid climate. High humidity creates ideal conditions for mold growth, and the spores it releases are a common irritant to the respiratory system, causing persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms. Children are often more susceptible to these effects.

The first step is to safely contain the affected area. Do not disturb the mold by wiping or brushing, as this will aerosolize the spores. Seal the wardrobe doors and keep the room closed off from the rest of the house. For a small, surface-level amount, you can carefully clean it yourself using a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, ensuring you wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the description of your villa feeling damp all the time and the extent of the growth on multiple clothing items, this suggests a wider humidity or condensation issue within the building envelope itself.

In older villas, this persistent dampness often points to a more systemic problem like inadequate ventilation, water intrusion, or condensation within AC units and ducts, which will continue to cause mold to return even after surface cleaning. The most effective course of action is to identify and resolve the moisture source. A professional inspection that includes moisture mapping and air quality testing is strongly recommended to assess the full scope and identify the root cause, as DIY cleaning often addresses only the visible symptom, not the problem.
