Is mold causing our health issues and how urgent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking a little for a few months, and now I'm seeing black spots on the wall behind our clothes. My husband has developed a persistent dry cough that seems to get worse at night, and I've been waking up with headaches and a stuffy nose. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms and how urgent is it to deal with?

Yes, the symptoms you and your husband are experiencing are consistent with mold exposure, and the situation is urgent. The persistent dry cough that worsens at night and morning headaches/stuffy nose are classic signs of inhaling mold spores in a confined sleeping area.

The leaking AC unit is the root cause. In Dubai's climate, constant AC use creates significant condensation. A small leak inside a dark, poorly ventilated closet creates the perfect damp environment for toxic black mold (like Stachybotrys or Aspergillus) to thrive. The spores then circulate every time the AC turns on.

You should address this immediately. Prolonged exposure, especially in your bedroom, can lead to more severe respiratory issues and chronic health problems. The first step is to stop using that AC unit to prevent further spore dispersal. Move your clothes and any affected items out of the closet to avoid cross-contamination.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, making the health risk much worse. This requires professional mold remediation.

A certified inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and the extent of the contamination, often hidden within the AC unit itself or the wall cavity. The remediation process will involve isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall, and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers to clean the air. Finally, the AC leak must be professionally repaired to prevent recurrence. Your health symptoms should improve significantly once the source is properly removed.
