Is mold causing our sickness and how to clean safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and my own allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our living room and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner where the AC vent is. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 5 years and never had an issue until after that last big storm. Could this mold be the reason we're all feeling so sick and what's the safest way to get it cleaned?

Yes, the black mold behind your sofa is very likely causing the coughing and allergy symptoms, especially given its proximity to the AC vent which can aerosolize the spores. The high humidity following Dubai's recent storm creates ideal conditions for this rapid growth, particularly in corners where cool AC air meets warm room air and causes condensation.

For a patch of significant size, professional remediation is the safest approach. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar often fails to address the root moisture problem and can dangerously aerosolize spores throughout your home. Professionals will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and physically remove the contaminated materials. The most critical step is identifying and fixing the source of moisture, which is often a clogged AC drain line or excessive condensation due to a temperature differential.

After remediation, a post-clearance test by an independent lab is the only way to verify the spore count in the air has returned to a safe level. For ongoing prevention, ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to maintain proper drainage and consider using a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity below 60%, which significantly inhibits mold growth in our climate.
