Is mold growth urgent & what should I do first?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the corner of my bedroom closet. Upon inspecting further, I found some mold growth on the back of the closet door and a few areas in between the shelves. The AC seems to be dripping more water than usual lately too. How urgent is this issue and what should I do first?

The situation you described is certainly concerning and warrants immediate attention. Mold growth can pose health risks to individuals, particularly those who are immune-compromised, asthmatic, or sensitive to mold spores. In the UAE, including Dubai, there are specific guidelines that emphasize prompt remediation for health and safety reasons.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that mold thrives in damp environments, which explains why you're seeing growth on the back of your closet door and between shelves. The increased water output from your AC could be a contributing factor, especially if condensation is not being properly managed or drainage systems are clogged.

Given the potential health implications and considering the climate conditions in Dubai, where humidity can fluctuate significantly, it would be wise to initiate remediation efforts without delay. However, before proceeding with any actions, I recommend scheduling a professional inspection by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. Professionals can provide a detailed assessment of the mold situation and advise on the most appropriate course of action.

In the interim, here are some immediate steps you should take:

1. Assess the extent: Open windows in your bedroom to allow air circulation if possible, but ensure it’s not excessively humid outside. Take photos or videos of the affected areas for documentation.
2. Contain the issue: Avoid spreading mold spores by closing off the affected room and preventing entry. Do not use fans that blow air through the moldy area as this can disperse spores.
3. Prevent further growth: Ensure proper ventilation in your closet, particularly after heavy rains or if you notice unusually high humidity levels.
4. Dry out materials: Use dehumidifiers to reduce moisture content in items like books, clothing, and paper stored near the affected areas.

Regarding UAE-specific regulations, the Environmental Health Authority (EHA) of Dubai has stringent guidelines for mold remediation. These include proper containment procedures, personal protective equipment usage by professionals, and adherence to cleaning protocols that ensure no cross-contamination occurs.

Once you have confirmed with a professional inspection, they will guide you on the next steps which might include moisture source control, removal of affected materials, and application of appropriate treatments or biocides. Remember, the key is to act swiftly to prevent further mold growth and protect your health.

Always prioritize safety and adhere to professional advice for effective remediation in Dubai's climate conditions.
