Is mold in AC closet urgent to clean?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC in the bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past two weeks and I kept meaning to call maintenance. I just opened the door today and the entire back wall and some of our stored suitcases are covered in black and green fuzzy mold. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed this. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and should we be staying somewhere else until it's fixed?

Yes, this situation is extremely urgent and requires immediate professional attention. The presence of visible black and green fuzzy mold, especially resulting from a two-week AC leak, indicates a significant and active moisture problem. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, mold can proliferate rapidly, and the AC closet acts as an incubator, spreading spores directly into your bedroom's air supply every time the unit operates.
The primary health concern is the continuous aerosolization of mold spores and mycotoxins into your living space, which can lead to respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health problems. Given the extent you've described (an entire wall and personal belongings), remediation is not a simple wipe-down. Improper cleaning will disturb the colony, causing a massive release of spores and cross-contamination. We strongly recommend you and your family vacate the bedroom until a certified professional can assess and remediate the area. Do not attempt to clean it yourself. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have specific protocols for mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively, preventing recurrence. This scenario requires a professional inspection to determine the full extent of moisture damage within the wall cavity and the AC unit itself. At Saniservice, we use thermal imaging, moisture meters, and specialized HEPA filtration equipment to contain, remove, and hygienize the area safely.
