Is mold in my AC causing my sinus issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and for the last couple of weeks, my sinuses have been constantly blocked and I’m waking up with a sore throat. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and greenish dust. Is this mold and could it be causing these health issues I’m having?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a significant mold contamination within your AC unit. The black and greenish dust on the filter is a classic indicator of mold growth, which thrives in the unique climate of Dubai. The constant high humidity, combined with condensation inside AC ducts, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold spores.

The health symptoms you describe—persistent sinus blockage, sore throat, and a damp, earthy smell from the vents—are directly consistent with exposure to mold. As these spores are circulated throughout your apartment, you are continuously inhaling them, which irritates the respiratory tract and can lead to the exact issues you are experiencing.

This is a serious concern that requires immediate professional attention. DIY cleaning of the visible filter is insufficient, as the contamination is likely deep within the ductwork, evaporator coils, and drip pans. A certified mold inspection, including air and surface sampling, is necessary to identify the species and concentration of mold, which dictates the remediation protocol.
