Is mold in my AC making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and sneezing non-stop for the last couple of weeks, and I’m starting to think it’s our AC unit. I pulled the filter out yesterday and found black, fuzzy patches growing along the edges and a really damp, earthy smell coming from the vents. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and it’s been so humid lately. Could this mold in the air conditioning be making my family sick, and what’s the first step I should take to fix it?

The black, fuzzy patches and earthy smell from your AC unit are strong indicators of active mould growth, which is a very likely culprit for the persistent coughing and sneezing in your family. Mould spores circulated by the AC can cause significant irritation to the respiratory system, especially in children and those with allergies or asthma. The high humidity we experience in Dubai, particularly during summer and in coastal areas like Jumeirah, creates the perfect environment for mould to thrive inside AC units due to constant condensation.

The first and most immediate step is to stop using that specific AC unit to prevent further spore dispersal. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mould without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home.

For a villa system, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Technicians can assess the entire ductwork and evaporator coil, which is where the most problematic growth often occurs out of sight. Reputable providers in Dubai should be able to diagnose the issue and provide before-and-after evidence of remediation, such as lab-based air quality tests, to confirm the environment is safe. Ensuring your AC unit is serviced regularly to manage condensation and drain lines is key to preventing recurrence in our climate.
