Is mold in my bedroom wall dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha has had a damp, earthy smell ever since the heavy rains a few weeks ago. I just pulled back the wardrobe that's against the outside wall and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold about the size of my hand. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. How urgent is it that we get a professional mold inspection, and is this something that could already be spreading inside the walls?

Based on your description, this situation warrants a professional inspection. The damp smell following heavy rains, visible mold growth, and your wife's symptoms are strong indicators of a moisture issue that needs immediate attention.

In Dubai's climate, exterior walls can develop condensation due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior. The recent heavy rain likely exacerbated this by driving moisture through the building envelope. Mold growth the size of your hand suggests the moisture has been present for some time. It is highly probable the mold has spread behind the wall, inside the cavity, or under flooring, as the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg.

The health symptoms you describe are a significant concern. While many molds cause only allergic reactions like congestion and headaches, the presence of moisture inside walls increases the risk of encountering more problematic species. Only a thorough inspection and lab analysis can identify the specific type and potential risk.

A proper inspection involves more than a visual check. It should include moisture mapping with a meter to find the water source, thermal imaging to see hidden spread, and air and surface sampling to be analyzed by a microbiology lab. This identifies the species and spore count, which is critical for planning an effective remediation. Given the location and symptoms, delaying could allow the problem to worsen. You should arrange for a certified assessment to determine the full extent and appropriate corrective actions.
