Is mold in my house an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and their pediatrician asked if there could be mold in the house. I just pulled out a storage box from the back of our walk-in wardrobe in Mirdif and found a whole corner of the wall behind it covered in black and green fuzzy spots. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, and should we be staying somewhere else until it's handled?

Based on your description, this is an urgent situation that requires immediate action. The combination of visible mold growth and persistent respiratory symptoms in children is a significant health concern.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes. The wall behind the storage box likely became a condensation point. The black and green fuzzy spots indicate active growth, which releases spores into your home's air, directly irritating the respiratory system and exacerbating conditions like the coughing you've observed.

For the health of your children, it is strongly recommended that you relocate them (and anyone with asthma or allergies) until the mold is professionally assessed and remediated. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially making the problem much worse.

A professional inspection is critical. They will identify the moisture source—often a small plumbing leak or condensation within the wall—and contain the area to prevent cross-contamination. The remediation process involves specialized equipment like HEPA air scrubbers to clean the air and proper disposal of contaminated materials. Following cleanup, a post-remediation verification test, ideally from an independent lab, is the only way to confirm the space is safe for your family to return.
