Is mold on AC filter causing our symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been making this weird damp smell for the past couple of months, and I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat that just won’t go away. I finally pulled the filter out yesterday and the back of it is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. Is this likely causing our symptoms and how urgently do we need to get the entire AC unit professionally cleaned?

Yes, the mold on your AC filter is very likely causing your symptoms. The damp smell, persistent stuffy nose, and sore throat are classic signs of exposure to mold spores being circulated by your air conditioning system. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, this is a common issue.

The black and green fuzzy growth indicates active microbial colonization. This needs to be addressed professionally and with some urgency, as prolonged exposure can worsen respiratory issues, particularly while you're sleeping. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing the filter will release a large concentration of spores into your bedroom.

For a situation like this, a full system cleaning and disinfection by a certified technician is the recommended course of action. They will clean the internal evaporator coils, drain pan, and ductwork, which are the actual sources of the mold growth—the filter is just catching some of the results. The entire AC unit must be treated to resolve the problem.

After remediation, consider an indoor air quality assessment that includes mold testing to verify the spore count has returned to a safe level. This is a standard practice here, as Dubai Municipality and the DHA have clear guidelines on maintaining healthy indoor environments, especially given our reliance on AC.
