Is mold on clothes dangerous for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past two weeks and I’m starting to worry. I’ve just pulled out the winter clothes from the back of the built-in wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black and green fuzzy spots. We live in a villa in Springs and it’s been so humid lately. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, or is this something I can handle myself with bleach?

The mold growth you've described on your clothes is a significant health concern, especially given your children's persistent coughing. The black and green fuzzy spots are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) and Aspergillus or Penicillium species. These molds produce mycotoxins and allergenic spores that become airborne when disturbed. For children with developing respiratory systems, this exposure can directly cause or severely exacerbate allergic reactions, asthma, and chronic coughing.

The high humidity in Dubai, particularly in villas in communities like The Springs, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. This problem is often amplified by condensation from year-round AC systems and insufficient ventilation in enclosed spaces like built-in wardrobes. Attempting to clean this yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like fabric, as it only removes surface discoloration without addressing the deep-rooted hyphae. More critically, improper cleaning will aerosolize a massive concentration of spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially contaminating the entire room.

This situation requires immediate professional attention. UAE regulations, such as the Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines, emphasize the importance of proper mold remediation to ensure a safe indoor environment. Do not attempt to handle or wash these clothes in your living space.

I recommend you call our certified team immediately for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. We will conduct air quality testing to assess spore levels, safely remove the contaminated materials, and identify the moisture source to prevent recurrence.
