Is mold remediation necessary for one room in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It must have been growing slowly for a while, and I'm worried it's from a hidden leak or the humidity. I’ve gotten a few quotes from cleaning companies, but they vary wildly from AED 800 to over AED 2,500. Is this price range normal for a single room mold remediation, and is it absolutely necessary to hire professionals for something like this, or can I tackle it myself with bleach?

That price range is normal for Dubai, as quotes vary based on the suspected cause and extent of the work. A simple surface clean is one cost, but addressing a hidden leak behind the wall—which is highly likely in your Al Barsha villa—is another.

Bleach is not recommended. It only bleaches the surface and does not kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall. More critically, it does not address the moisture source. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold regrowth if the underlying issue isn't resolved.

For a patch spreading behind furniture, professional remediation is strongly advised. The wall cavity may be extensively contaminated, requiring controlled removal to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home. Reputable companies will include containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment. The most critical step is the inspection to find the moisture source, which could be a slow pipe leak, condensation from an AC unit, or capillary action from the foundation.

Before hiring, verify the company’s quote includes a cause investigation, not just cleaning. Any remediation is temporary without fixing the leak. For a definitive answer on the mold type and its potential health impacts, a lab analysis from an air or surface sample can be conducted, but the presence of any persistent mold growth from moisture requires professional removal.
