Is mold remediation worth 3,000 AED or can I DIY?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get these black specks all over the leather shoes and bags stored in the back. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and we’re worried it’s spreading. I got a quote for a professional mold remediation company, but it was for almost 3,000 AED. Is this a reasonable price for a job like this, or is it something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner from ACE Hardware?

Based on your description of black specks on leather goods in a Jumeirah villa, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold infestation, a common issue here due to our extreme humidity and constant AC use, which creates significant condensation issues. The 3,000 AED quote is a reasonable starting point for a professional remediation, as it should encompass a full inspection, air quality testing to identify all spore types, containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination, specialized HEPA filtration, and the application of UAE-approved antimicrobial agents to ensure the mold is eradicated, not just cleaned superficially.

Attempting a DIY approach with a cleaner from ACE is highly inadvisable. Surface cleaning visible mold on the leather does not address the root cause—the hidden spores in the closet's structure, walls, or ceiling. Agitating the mold will aerosolize the spores, potentially spreading the problem to other parts of your bedroom and significantly increasing the health risk to your family and the final remediation cost. In the UAE, improper handling can violate health and safety standards for residential properties.

For a confirmed and spreading case like this, a professional inspection and remediation is not just worth the cost; it is a necessary investment in your property's integrity and your family's health. I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional for a comprehensive assessment.
