Is mold under AC urgent? Can we sleep in room?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, but after all the humidity last week, I just pulled back the corner and found a bunch of black and greenish mold underneath. We've been sleeping in that room the whole time. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should we be staying in another room until it's fixed?

Yes, this is an urgent situation and you should stop using the bedroom immediately. The combination of persistent water from the AC leak and Dubai's high humidity has created an ideal environment for rapid mold growth.
The primary concern is sustained exposure while sleeping, as you are inhaling spores for 6-8 hours continuously. This can lead to significant respiratory irritation, worsened allergies, sinus congestion, and headaches. Individuals with asthma or weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for more severe reactions. The visible black and green growth indicates an active colony that is releasing spores into your air. For remediation, a simple cleaning of the visible mold is insufficient. The water has likely seeped into the carpet underlay and possibly the subfloor, creating a reservoir of moisture you cannot see. Professional remediation is necessary to properly contain the area, remove and dispose of the contaminated carpet and underlay, treat the subfloor, and use HEPA vacuuming to remove all spores. Crucially, the AC leak itself must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent the problem from recurring immediately. Until a certified mold inspector assesses the extent and a professional remediation is completed, you should relocate to another room. In the UAE, look for providers who can offer verifiable before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels. |
