Is mold under carpet urgent for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I’ve just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in Khalifa City and found a bunch of black spots, and it feels a bit damp underneath. We had that really heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and I’m worried it’s been growing since then. How urgent is it to get this treated, like is this a call-the-landlord-right-now situation or can it wait a few days?

Yes, this is urgent and warrants immediate action, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms. The dampness and visible growth indicate an active mold colony, which can release spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air, directly irritating the lungs and worsening coughs.

In Dubai's climate, the recent heavy dew created ideal conditions for mold growth indoors, particularly in hidden, poorly ventilated areas under carpets where moisture gets trapped. This is not something that typically resolves on its own and will likely worsen without intervention. Your first step should be to contact your landlord or building management today. Under typical tenancy contracts and regulations, addressing moisture ingress and resultant mold is the landlord's responsibility. Document the finding with photos.

Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself, as disturbing it can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. For the health of your family, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent of the problem, identify the moisture source, and perform safe, effective remediation. A proper assessment often involves moisture meters and, if necessary, air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentrations, which is particularly important when health symptoms are present. In the interim, minimize time spent in that room and ensure good ventilation throughout the home.
