Is mold under my AC a health risk in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the hallway for the last few weeks, but I only just pulled back the edge and found a bunch of black and greenish spots underneath. The smell is really musty now. How urgent is it that I get a professional mold inspection done here in Dubai, and could this be a health risk for my family already?

A professional inspection is urgent in this scenario. The combination of persistent water from a leaking AC unit, Dubai's high humidity, and the presence of visible black/green growth beneath carpet creates a high-risk environment for mold proliferation. The musty odor confirms active microbial growth.

This is a potential health risk, particularly for children, elderly individuals, or anyone with asthma or allergies. Exposure to mold in a confined indoor space can cause persistent allergy-like symptoms—congestion, coughing, and eye irritation. The risk is elevated because the mold is growing on a porous material (carpet and its underlay), which can harbor extensive colonies out of sight.

In Dubai's climate, AC condensation is a primary moisture source for indoor mold. The inspection should identify the mold type through lab analysis and locate the full extent of the damage, which is often worse beneath the surface. Remediation will likely involve fixing the AC leak, removing the affected carpet section, and treating the subfloor. Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.
