Is mold under my AC vent a health emergency?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little bit for the last few weeks, but yesterday I pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of my hand underneath. We've been sleeping in this room the whole time and I'm starting to get worried about our health. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, and should we be sleeping in another room until it's fixed?

A small AC leak leading to carpet mold is common in Dubai's climate, but it does require prompt attention. The urgency depends on the mold type and your household's health.

For most healthy adults, this exposure typically causes allergy-like symptoms: congestion, sneezing, or irritated eyes. The risk is significantly higher for infants, the elderly, or anyone with asthma or a compromised immune system. Since you've been sleeping there and are concerned, it's wise to relocate until the issue is resolved. The constant AC operation creates a perfect storm of moisture and condensation, allowing hidden mold to thrive in walls or underflooring far beyond the visible patch.

You need a two-step professional approach. First, a certified inspector should conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination—what you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. Second, a remediation team must fix the AC leak at its source, remove the affected carpet and underpad, and properly treat the subfloor. Simply cleaning the visible spot is insufficient and will lead to recurrence. Look for providers who can show verifiable before-and-after lab results to confirm the area is truly remediated.
