Is mold under rug urgent health risk for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the corner of the rug in our spare bedroom, which is on the outer wall of our villa in Jumeirah, and found a large patch of black and green fuzzy stuff. It must have been growing slowly since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, and is it a health risk for my family to stay in the house tonight?

Yes, this is an urgent health risk, especially for children. The type of mold is key, but any significant growth under a rug indicates a prolonged moisture issue and the spores are now airborne, which directly causes respiratory irritation like coughing.
For tonight, isolate the room. Keep the door closed, do not run the AC in that room as it can spread spores, and ensure your children sleep in a well-ventilated area away from the source. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with potential condensation from an AC unit on an outer villa wall, creates a perfect environment for this rapid growth. A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source (often a small leak or condensation), assess the extent of the growth (which can travel under flooring), and take samples for lab identification to determine the specific species and its potential toxicity. This is a common issue in villas here due to the climate, and proper remediation involves containing the area, removing the contaminated materials, and addressing the root cause to prevent immediate recurrence. |
