Is moldy AC causing our headaches and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park seems to be blowing out a dusty, damp smell. My husband and I have both had constant headaches and a stuffy nose for the past month, which clears up when we go on vacation. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and green speckles. Could this be causing our symptoms and how urgent is it to get it cleaned professionally?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible microbial growth on your AC filter, it is highly probable that a contaminated air conditioning system is the source of your health issues. The recurrent headaches and nasal congestion that resolve when you leave the environment are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) being circulated by your AC unit.
The climate in Dubai, characterized by high humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation within the system. Condensation inside the AC ducts provides the necessary moisture, while dust and debris act as a food source. The black and green speckles you observed are likely a combination of mold genera such as Cladosporium, Aspergillus, or Penicillium, all of which are known to cause the type of symptoms you are experiencing. This situation should be considered urgent. Continuous exposure can lead to a worsening of symptoms and potentially develop into more serious respiratory conditions or chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment protocols can aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your apartment. The remediation must be conducted by professionals using HEPA-filtered negative air machines and antimicrobial agents approved for HVAC systems. I strongly recommend you schedule a professional mold inspection and indoor air quality assessment immediately. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough investigation, including air and surface sampling, to identify the contamination's extent and provide a compliant remediation plan as per UAE standards.
