Is musty basement smell from mold affecting my son?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the basement, which is where my son’s room is located. It's been there for about two weeks now, and it’s really starting to worry me since he’s been coughing more than usual lately. We’ve lived here for 2 years, but this is the first time something like this has happened. Has anyone else experienced mold issues in their rental homes?

The musty smell from the basement could indeed be indicative of mold growth. Mold spores can thrive in damp environments such as basements and can produce a variety of unpleasant odors, particularly if they're breaking down organic matter like wood or paper. The presence of mold is more likely after heavy rains, especially when coupled with less than optimal ventilation.

In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, homes that have experienced moisture issues are at higher risk for mold growth. Since you've only noticed this smell recently and it's been ongoing for two weeks, it might be prudent to take action sooner rather than later. Mold can produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, toxins which could exacerbate respiratory symptoms such as coughing or wheezing, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions.

Given the situation, I would recommend a professional mold inspection by a certified expert in the UAE/Dubai region. Such an inspection should be conducted to determine whether there is indeed active mold growth and if so, its extent and species. This will help tailor remediation efforts effectively.

If you decide to proceed with a professional inspection, you can contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an assessment. They are well-regarded in the region and should be able to provide you with accurate information regarding any mold presence.

In the meantime, ensure that the area is properly ventilated. Open windows if possible, or use a fan to help circulate air. If there's standing water or moisture around your son’s room, consider addressing it by cleaning up and drying out the affected areas thoroughly. Keep an eye on humidity levels; ideally, they should not exceed 60% in residential spaces.

If you continue to see symptoms like coughing, consider consulting a healthcare professional to rule out other potential causes and discuss any necessary treatments or precautions. Early detection and action are crucial in managing mold issues effectively.
