Is musty smell and AC overload due to mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain last month, I noticed a musty smell coming from the basement where our playroom is located. My kids have been complaining of persistent coughs and runny noses since then, and it’s really worrying me. The AC in the basement also seems to be working overtime despite not being particularly warm outside. Could this all be related to mold? What should I do next?

Yes, the musty smell and AC overload could very well be related to mold growth. In the UAE, particularly in areas like Dubai where we experience heavy rainfall, such conditions can lead to moisture accumulation, creating an ideal environment for mold proliferation. Mold spores are omnipresent but thrive when humidity levels exceed 60-70% or when there's a water source that is not addressed promptly.

The musty smell you're noticing, combined with your children experiencing persistent coughs and runny noses since the rain event last month, points towards a potential mold issue. It’s important to understand that exposure to molds can cause respiratory issues and other health problems, especially in children. The overworking of AC units can also be attributed to attempts at mitigating dampness or reducing the musty smell.

Given these circumstances, it is highly advisable to conduct a professional inspection. In Dubai, regulations stipulate that buildings must maintain proper ventilation and moisture control systems to prevent such issues from arising. If mold is indeed present, it’s crucial to address it promptly to avoid further health concerns and property damage.

For immediate action, I recommend reaching out to our team at Saniservice by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. Our experts can provide a thorough assessment of your basement area and recommend the necessary remediation steps based on UAE-specific regulations.

In the meantime, avoid entering the affected areas as much as possible to prevent further mold exposure. Keep doors and windows closed if feasible to reduce airflow that might spread spores. Regularly inspecting moisture levels in basements during rainy seasons can also help prevent similar issues from occurring again.

Remember, early intervention is key to effective mold remediation. Taking these steps will not only improve air quality but could also save you costs associated with more extensive clean-ups later on.
