Is my AC mold causing my cough and headache?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks and I’ve developed this persistent dry cough and headache that just won’t go away. I finally pulled the unit out a bit and found a patch of black, fuzzy stuff spreading on the wall behind it. Is this black mold and could it be causing my symptoms, or is it just the usual Dubai dust?

Yes, that black, fuzzy growth is almost certainly mold, and it is a very likely cause of your persistent dry cough and headache. The continuous moisture from the AC leak creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive, especially in Dubai's climate where high humidity and condensation are constant challenges. Your symptoms are a classic reaction to mold exposure, which irritates the respiratory tract.

What you see is likely a mixture of mold species and common dust. However, the color 'black' raises a specific concern for Stachybotrys chartarum, often called toxic black mold, which can produce mycotoxins linked to more severe health effects. Only a professional lab analysis can confirm the exact species and the associated health risk.

You should arrange for a professional mold inspection. A certified inspector will assess the full extent of the growth, which is often more widespread behind walls, and take samples for laboratory identification. This is a serious case due to the confirmed growth and your correlating health symptoms. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom air, potentially worsening your condition.

The remediation process involves fixing the AC leak first to eliminate the moisture source, then safely containing and removing the contaminated materials using professional-grade HEPA filtration equipment. After remediation, post-clearance testing is essential to verify the spore count in the air has returned to a safe, normal level. Addressing this properly should resolve your health issues.
