Is my AC mold causing my morning scratchy throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I've found black spots spreading on the wall behind the headboard. My throat has been feeling scratchy every morning and I'm waking up with a stuffy nose. Could this mold be the reason I'm feeling this way, and what's the best way to handle it properly?

Yes, the black spots and your symptoms are very likely connected. In Dubai's climate, AC units that develop leaks create the perfect humid, dark environment for mold growth, often within just 48-72 hours. The scratchy throat and stuffy nose upon waking are classic reactions to inhaling mold spores that have been dispersed by the AC airflow throughout the night.

For proper handling, start by having a certified technician repair the AC leak immediately, as this is the source of moisture. Do not attempt to clean the visible mold yourself with bleach or other cleaners, as this can agitate it and cause a much larger release of spores into your bedroom air. Disturbing it without proper containment measures risks spreading the contamination.

The best course is a professional inspection. A specialist can assess the extent of the growth, both visible and hidden within the AC unit or wall cavity, and take air and surface samples for lab analysis. This identifies the mold species and spore concentration, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation strategy. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing the contaminated materials. Simply painting over it or using a surface spray will not solve the problem and the mold will return.
