Is my AC mold causing my scratchy throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water, and for the last couple of weeks, there's been a really damp, moldy smell coming from the vent in the master bedroom. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and I'm starting to get worried. Is it possible the mold chiller is the cause of this, and how urgent is it to get it cleaned?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that microbial growth within your AC system, potentially including the evaporator coil (often mistakenly called the "mold chiller"), is the direct cause of your symptoms and the damp odor. The constant leaking provides the moisture necessary for mold and bacteria to proliferate. When the unit operates, it aerosolizes these spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which are then distributed directly into your bedroom air. A scratchy throat and respiratory irritation upon waking are classic indicators of exposure to these contaminants.

In the UAE's humid climate, this is a common but serious issue. The evaporator coil, located inside your AC's indoor unit, is a prime location for this growth due to constant condensation. Simply cleaning the visible parts is insufficient; the entire internal assembly, including the drain pan and condensate drain line, requires a specialized hygienization process.

This situation warrants a professional inspection. We use fiber-optic borescopes to visually confirm biological growth deep within the ductwork and unit, followed by surface and air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration levels. DIY attempts often spread the contamination.

Given the health symptoms you're experiencing, I would classify this as urgent. I recommend you contact a certified professional immediately for a comprehensive assessment. Please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. Addressing this properly will resolve the odor and protect your health.
