Is my child's cough from AC mold or something serious?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler and my 8-year-old have both developed this persistent, dry cough over the past week, and it's definitely worse at night. I've noticed it seems to flare up whenever the AC kicks on in our bedroom. We live in an older building in Deira, and I'm starting to worry there's mold in the ventilation system or it's just the extreme dryness. What's the best way to tell if this is an environmental allergy or something more serious that needs a pediatrician?

As a certified indoor environmental quality specialist here in Dubai, your observations are extremely telling. That correlation between the AC activation and the worsening cough at night is a classic red flag for a contaminated HVAC system, particularly in older Deira buildings where maintenance can be inconsistent.

The two primary culprits are indeed microbial growth (mold/bacteria) within the damp, dark ductwork and the extreme dryness. AC units remove humidity, and if not properly humidified, the arid air can irritate respiratory tracts, causing a dry cough. However, the timing you describe strongly suggests a particle-based irritant being actively blown into the room. Mold spores and fungal fragments are a common cause.

UAE regulations, like Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety guidelines, mandate regular duct cleaning and hygienization, but enforcement in private residences is limited. You can perform a basic check: does the air from the vent have a musty, damp odor? Can you see any visible black or fuzzy growth around the vent covers?

My strong professional recommendation is to cease using that specific AC unit until it can be inspected. For your children's health, a two-pronged approach is critical:
1. Consult a pediatrician to rule out infections and manage immediate symptoms (this is vital).
2. Schedule a professional indoor air quality assessment. We use borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and air sampling to identify specific contaminants. This is not a DIY job.

Don't risk it with your little ones health. For immediate professional inspection and testing, please call our team at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537. We can determine the source and recommend a proper remediation protocol, like a full duct hygienization.
