Is my child's cough from apartment mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled out the sofa bed in our Deira apartment to change the sheets and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it. I’m worried their cough is because of this. Has anyone else dealt with this, and should I take them to a doctor to get checked out?

It is very possible the mold behind your sofa bed is contributing to your children's persistent cough. Mold releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) into the air, which are well-known respiratory irritants. In a confined space like an apartment, constant exposure can cause symptoms exactly like chronic coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, particularly in children.

Given the high humidity levels in Dubai, especially with year-round AC use creating condensation, this is a common issue in poorly ventilated areas. Furniture placed against exterior walls is a frequent culprit, as it traps moisture and creates the perfect environment for mold growth. You should move the bed away from the wall immediately and ensure the area is kept dry.

For your children's health, a visit to a pediatrician is advisable. Explain you've discovered a significant mold source. They can assess if the cough is an allergic reaction or irritation and rule out other causes. In the meantime, improve airflow in the room and consider using a dehumidifier.

Do not attempt to clean a large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a high concentration of spores. A professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source (like a leaking pipe or condensation from an AC unit) and assess the extent. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall, and HEPA vacuuming to clear the air, not just surface wiping. For verification, post-remediation testing by an independent microbiology lab is the only way to confirm the environment is safe.
