Is my kids' cough from bedroom mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of the wall where the AC unit drips. The room has smelled a bit damp lately but I didn't think much of it. Could this mold be the reason for their persistent coughs and should I be worried about them sleeping in there?

Black mold exposure is a likely cause of persistent coughing, especially in children who are more sensitive to airborne spores. The damp smell and location near the AC drip point are strong indicators. In Dubai's humid climate, condensation from AC units is a primary cause of wall mold, creating ideal conditions for growth.
You should move the children to a different room immediately and keep the bedroom door closed. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold will release a large number of spores into the air. The constant AC use here recirculates these particles, which can irritate the respiratory tract and exacerbate allergies, leading to symptoms like chronic coughs, congestion, and wheezing. For a case this visible and with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species (like Stachybotrys, which is often black and slimy) and its concentration in the air. The remediation must address the root cause—likely a clog in the AC drain line or insufficient insulation causing condensation—or the mold will return. Any reputable service should provide before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels. This is the only way to know the environment is safe for your children to return. |
