Is my kids' cough from black mold dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I'm starting to worry. I finally pulled out their toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it, probably from the humidity. What are the specific health risks for young children from this kind of exposure, and should I take them to a doctor here in Dubai right away?

Persistent coughs in children linked to visible mold growth should be taken seriously. The primary risk from this type of exposure is not typically from the "black" color itself, but from the mycotoxins and allergens all molds release. For children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, this can cause significant irritation, leading to chronic coughing, wheezing, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms.
Given the high humidity in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, this mold growth is a common issue. The wall behind furniture is a classic spot for condensation to form and mold to develop unseen. You should have them seen by a pediatrician to rule out other causes and discuss the mold exposure. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room immediately and keep the children away from the affected area. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can aerosolize the spores. A professional mold inspection is strongly advised to determine the extent of the growth inside the wall cavity and to safely remediate it. The inspector should provide a detailed report with before-and-after lab testing to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe state. |
