Is my kids' cough from black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the window frame onto the wall, probably from all the humidity. I’m really worried their cough is connected to this. How quickly do I need to get this professionally cleaned to make the room safe for them again?

It is very possible the cough is connected, especially in Dubai's humid climate where indoor mold growth is common. Mold spores, particularly from active growth like you've described, are a well-documented respiratory irritant. They can trigger persistent coughing, congestion, and worsen allergy and asthma symptoms, which is a significant concern for children.
You need to address this quickly. The first step is to restrict access to the room to prevent further spore inhalation. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper scrubbing or bleach can aerosolize more spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening the problem. The speed of remediation is critical; a professional assessment should be scheduled within the next few days. In Dubai, the high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for this issue. Condensation often forms on and around window frames and cold walls, leading to the exact problem you've found. A proper remediation involves not just removing the visible growth but using moisture meters to find the hidden dampness in the wall and ensuring the area is completely dried to prevent immediate regrowth. For your children's health, a professional inspection is strongly advised. A certified inspector can identify the mold species and the full extent of the contamination. The remediation process itself involves containment of the area, safe removal of affected materials, and air scrubbing to clear the air of spores, which can make the room safe again typically within a few days to a week after the work is completed. |
