Is my kids' cough from hidden mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a slow leak in the AC unit. I'm really worried their cough is connected to this. What are the health risks and should I take them to a doctor specifically for mold exposure?

Yes, your children's persistent cough is very likely connected to the hidden mold exposure you discovered. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create condensation, this is a common trigger. The mold releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are respiratory irritants, especially for children.

You should take them to a doctor and specifically mention the mold discovery. This allows the doctor to consider environmental causes beyond a standard virus. Treatment often focuses on managing the allergic or irritant symptoms and, most importantly, removing the source of the exposure.

For the mold itself, a professional inspection is strongly recommended in cases like this. The visible patch behind the sofa is likely just a portion of the growth; the leak from the AC unit may have caused contamination within the wall cavity or the AC system itself, which continues to spread spores throughout your apartment's air. Remediation involves stopping the moisture source (fixing the AC leak), safely removing the contaminated materials, and verifying the air quality is restored—steps best handled by a certified provider to prevent cross-contamination.

In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room as much as possible and keep the children away from the affected area. Do not attempt to clean the large patch yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. The priority is identifying the full extent of the problem to properly resolve it.
