Is my kids' cough from mold? Clean ASAP?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa in our villa's living room in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. I'm really worried their cough is connected. How quickly do I need to get this professionally cleaned to make it safe for them?

Yes, it's very possible the mold is causing your children's cough. Mold exposure, particularly to the spores and mycotoxins some species release, is a common irritant that can cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms. The confined space behind the sofa would have concentrated their exposure.
Given the visible size of the patch and the health symptoms, you need professional remediation, not just a surface clean. In Dubai's high humidity, mold roots (hyphae) penetrate porous materials like drywall and plaster, which often requires removal and replacement. A proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and safely removing contaminated materials. You should arrange a professional assessment immediately. Look for a provider that offers a clear protocol and can verify results with post-remediation testing, often through a third-party lab, to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to safe levels. This is the only way to be sure the environment is safe for your family. Until then, keep the children out of that room and ensure good ventilation elsewhere. |
