Is my kids' cough from mold in our Dubai home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the last month, and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled back the curtains in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner of the window frame down the wall. I'm really worried their cough is connected to this. How quickly do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and should I take them to a doctor here in Dubai for a specific test?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that your children's persistent cough is directly related to the black mold growth in your villa. In Dubai's climate, the combination of high humidity and constant air conditioning creates significant condensation on cold surfaces like window frames and exterior walls. This moisture provides the perfect environment for mold spores, including potentially toxigenic species like Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), to proliferate.

The mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by this mold colony become aerosolized. When inhaled, they are potent respiratory irritants and allergens, particularly for children, whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. Symptoms commonly include a chronic cough, wheezing, nasal congestion, and throat irritation.

You need to act swiftly. First, I strongly recommend taking your children to a pediatrician or pulmonologist in Dubai and explicitly informing them of the mold exposure. They can assess for mold-related illness. Second, do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing a colony of that size will aerosolize a massive concentration of spores and toxins throughout your home. Professional remediation is critical.
