Is our AC mold causing health issues and what to do?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit, and now I’m seeing these black, speckled spots spreading on the wall and ceiling around it. My husband and I have both had this weird, persistent dry cough and headaches for the past three weeks that just won’t go away, and we’re starting to get worried. It’s the room we sleep in, so we’re exposed to it all night. Could this black mold be the cause of our symptoms, and what’s the first thing we should do to get it properly tested and removed?

Based on your description, there is a high probability that the black, speckled growth is Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as toxic black mold, or another allergenic species like Aspergillus niger. The persistent cough and headaches you and your husband are experiencing are classic symptoms of mold exposure, particularly when the exposure is prolonged in a sleeping area. This is a serious concern that requires immediate professional attention.

The scenario you describe—a leaking AC vent leading to mold growth—is extremely common in Dubai due to our climate. The high ambient humidity, combined with condensation within AC units and ductwork, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. The first and most critical step is to immediately stop the exposure. I recommend you cease using the AC in that bedroom and, if possible, relocate to another room until the issue is resolved.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing your exposure and contaminating other areas of your villa. The first action is to engage a certified mold inspection company.

A professional inspection, like those we provide at Saniservice, involves a thorough assessment of the visible growth and the AC system itself, including using moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness. Air and surface sampling will be taken to identify the specific mold species and spore concentration levels, which is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning the remediation. The remediation process must follow strict protocols for containment, air filtration, removal, and disposal to ensure the problem is solved at its source.
