Is professional mold removal necessary for a large patch?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from mold in their bedroom closet. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and I finally pulled all the clothes out to find a huge patch of black mold covering the entire back wall, probably from the last humid spell. I’m worried about the health risks and how far it’s spread. What’s the realistic cost for professional mold removal for something this size, and is it absolutely necessary to hire experts or can I tackle this myself with a dehumidifier and bleach?

That level of mold growth absolutely requires professional assessment and remediation. A patch covering an entire wall indicates a serious, ongoing moisture problem that DIY methods cannot address. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it doesn't kill the root structure of mold inside drywall or wood, and the fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space.

In a Dubai villa, especially in Al Barsha, the source is likely condensation from your AC system or a hidden plumbing leak within the wall cavity. The high humidity we experience, combined with the constant cooling cycle, creates perfect conditions for mold to thrive unseen. A dehumidifier is a critical tool for prevention but is ineffective at remediating an active, established colony of this size.

The health risks for children are significant. Continuous exposure to the mycotoxins and spores from a large infestation can cause persistent respiratory issues, like the coughing you've observed, along with headaches, fatigue, and worsened allergies.

Professional remediation is necessary to safely contain the area, remove and dispose of contaminated porous materials like drywall and insulation, use industrial-grade HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and—most critically—identify and rectify the root moisture source to prevent immediate regrowth. The cost is driven by the extent of structural damage and the required containment procedures, not just the visible patch. You should request a detailed assessment and quote from a company that can provide a clear remediation protocol and post-clearance verification testing.
