Is recurring black mold in bathroom dangerous for my child?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids' bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has this black speckled mold growing along the ceiling corners that I only really noticed after the recent humidity. I’ve wiped it away a couple of times but it keeps coming back stronger, and now my youngest has started getting a weird cough. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a good cleaner?

Recurring black mold in a bathroom is a legitimate health concern, especially for a child. The type commonly found in damp areas like bathrooms is often Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (toxic black mold), which can produce irritants and allergens. For a child with a developing respiratory system, exposure can trigger or worsen symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. The recent humidity in Dubai creates the perfect environment for this rapid regrowth.
The fact it returns stronger after cleaning indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from inadequate ventilation or condensation from your AC system. Wiping surface mold doesn't address the spores or the root cause. For a recurring problem with a child exhibiting symptoms, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the exact species through lab analysis to determine the specific risk and locate the source of the moisture, which is critical for a permanent solution. In the short term, improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and ensure your AC is serviced to manage indoor humidity effectively, which should be kept below 60%. For cleaning, use a solution of vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, but wear a mask and ensure the room is well-ventilated to avoid inhaling spores during the process. |
