Is recurring black mold making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Park. I wiped it away with vinegar but it came back in a couple of days, and it's starting to spread to the adjacent wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaners, or do I need to call in a professional company?

Recurring black mold can definitely cause the symptoms you're describing, particularly in children. The persistent coughing is a common reaction to mold spores, which act as irritants to the respiratory system. The fact it returned after a vinegar cleaning and is spreading indicates a persistent moisture source that you haven't yet identified and addressed.
In Dubai's climate, this is a frequent issue. Our year-round reliance on AC can create significant temperature differences between rooms and walls, leading to condensation—especially behind large furniture like wardrobes that block airflow. This trapped moisture is the perfect environment for mold to thrive. For a recurring and spreading case, a stronger cleaner is not the solution; it only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause. The moisture is likely coming from either internal condensation or a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope. You need a professional inspection. A reputable company will use a thermal imaging camera to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture and a borescope to look inside your walls if necessary. They can then provide a remediation plan. For your children's health, insist on a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a safe level. This is the only way to be sure the environment is truly healthy again. |
