Is seaside mold causing our headaches and stuffy noses?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the side that faces the sea. My husband and I have both been waking up with terrible headaches and stuffy noses that clear up once we leave for work. I'm really worried this mold could be making us sick. Should we get it tested professionally or can we handle this ourselves with bleach?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black mold growth behind your wardrobe is the direct cause of your recurring headaches and stuffy noses. These are classic symptoms of exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins, which are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by actively growing colonies. The location you describe—a bedroom on a seaside-facing wall—creates a perfect storm for mold proliferation common in Dubai.

The combination of the UAE's high ambient humidity and the constant cooling from your air conditioning unit leads to significant condensation within the wall cavity. This is especially pronounced on external walls, where the temperature differential is greatest. The wardrobe placed against this wall further restricts airflow, trapping moisture and creating a dark, damp microenvironment ideal for mold, most notably the toxigenic species Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold").

I strongly advise against using bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface pigmentation without addressing the root structure (hyphae) deep within the material. Furthermore, bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold colony after the chlorine evaporates. Disturbing the colony through unprofessional cleaning attempts can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins, significantly worsening your exposure and symptoms.

This situation requires professional assessment and remediation. DIY methods are insufficient and potentially hazardous. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to map the exact moisture extent and conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific species and spore count. This is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol as per Dubai Municipality guidelines. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials safely, and employing HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatments to ensure the environment is safe and healthy.
