Is shower ceiling mold urgent or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom never seems to fully dry out, even with the AC running constantly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket?

In Dubai's climate, that shower ceiling mold is a common issue due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. A small, new patch is often manageable yourself. The urgency depends on the size and your household's health. If the patch is under 10 square feet and no one is experiencing respiratory irritation, DIY is a reasonable first step.
For DIY, skip the bleach. It's mostly water and only removes the surface stain, not the root structure, so the mold will often return. Use a dedicated fungicidal spray from a hardware store or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit, and then rinse. The critical step is to fix the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls. A squeegee for the shower screen helps immensely. If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, has penetrated the ceiling material, or if anyone in your home has asthma or allergies, professional assessment is advised. They can identify if there's a more serious moisture issue within the ceiling void and perform remediation that includes containment and air scrubbing to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms. In many Marina apartments, the underlying cause is inadequate ventilation, not just surface moisture. |
