Is shower grout mold fixable myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and it’s spreading up the wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse since the weather got more humid. I tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it came back within a week. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional to stop it for good?

The black discoloration in your shower grout is almost certainly active mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the condensation created by year-round air conditioning. While surface cleaning with bleach can temporarily remove the visible spores, it is not a fungicide and will not kill the root system (hyphae) embedded deep within the porous grout. This is why the growth returns so quickly.

For a small, superficial area, a proper remediation attempt would require a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide (not bleach), thorough scrubbing with a stiff brush, and immediate drying with fans. However, given that you describe it as "spreading up the wall," this indicates a more significant moisture issue. The problem likely extends behind the tiles, potentially into the wall substrate itself. This is a serious concern as it can compromise structural elements and significantly degrade indoor air quality, leading to health risks.

In the UAE, professional remediation is strongly advised for persistent or spreading mold. Our protocols at Saniservice follow international IICRC S520 standards and use industrial-grade equipment, including HEPA sanding to remove contaminated grout, antimicrobial treatments, and negative air machines to contain spores. We then identify and rectify the source of moisture—often inadequate bathroom ventilation or a failed waterproofing membrane—to provide a permanent solution.

For a definitive diagnosis and a guarantee that the problem is resolved at its source, I recommend a professional inspection. Please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an assessment.
