Is shower grout mold urgent or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting darker and darker over the last couple of months, and now there's a definite blackish-green patch spreading up the corner wall. I live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers and the bathroom has no window, so it never really dries out properly. Given how humid it gets here, is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this week, or is it okay to wait until after the Eid holidays?

The dark patch in your shower grout is almost certainly active mold growth, and in Dubai's climate, it should be addressed promptly. The constant high humidity, especially in a windowless bathroom, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive not just on the surface but potentially within the wall cavity itself.

While it may not constitute a full-blown emergency requiring immediate evacuation, waiting weeks is not advisable. The colony will continue to spread, and its presence indicates a persistent moisture issue that needs correction. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself with a dedicated grout cleaner or a diluted bleach solution. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dried afterward by running the bathroom's exhaust fan for several hours.

However, given that the mold is spreading up the corner wall—a common location for concealed moisture damage—a professional assessment is strongly recommended. This pattern suggests water may be migrating behind the tiles, which DIY cleaning cannot address. A proper inspection can determine the extent of the problem, identify the moisture source (often failed sealant or grout), and recommend a remediation plan to prevent recurrence. For verifiable results, seek a provider that uses before-and-after testing to confirm the mold has been effectively removed.
