Is shower mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the last couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I've just pulled back the silicone sealant around our shower in our Jumeirah apartment and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. It's been so humid lately, and I'm worried this is the cause of their allergies. Could this mold be making them sick, and what's the best way to get rid of it for good?

Yes, the black mold you've discovered underneath the silicone sealant is very likely a significant contributor to your children's persistent cough. This is a common and serious issue we encounter in Dubai, particularly in bathrooms.

The species you describe is most likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger. These molds produce mycotoxins and spores that become airborne, especially when disturbed. In the enclosed space of a bathroom, these particles are easily inhaled, leading to allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and the exact coughing symptoms you're observing. The high humidity we experience, combined with condensation from hot showers and the constant cycling of AC units (which can spread spores throughout the apartment), creates a perfect incubator for such growth.

Attempting to remove it yourself by scrubbing is highly discouraged. This will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially contaminating other areas of your home.

For a permanent solution, professional remediation is essential. The correct protocol involves:
1. Containment: Sealing off the area with plastic sheeting to prevent cross-contamination.
2. Removal: The compromised silicone sealant and any affected grout must be completely mechanically removed.
3. Treatment: The underlying substrate needs to be treated with specialized, UAE-approved biocides to kill hidden hyphae (the root structure of the mold).
4. Drying: Using professional-grade dehumidifiers to bring the moisture content to acceptable levels.
5. Reconstruction: Re-sealing with high-quality, mold-resistant silicone.

Given the health implications for your children, I strongly recommend an immediate professional inspection and remediation.
