Is shower mold causing our cough and allergies?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot in the mornings and my own allergies have been terrible since the weather got more humid. I've just noticed black speckled mold growing along the caulking at the bottom of our shower in the master bathroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. What’s the most effective and safe way to clean this, and should I be worried enough to take them to a doctor?

The mould in your shower is very likely contributing to your family's cough and allergies. The humid Dubai climate, combined with shower steam and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mould growth. This mould releases spores into the air that can irritate the respiratory system, especially overnight when the bathroom door is closed and the AC circulates air throughout the home.
For the visible mould on the caulking, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective for a surface clean. Apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly. Always ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during cleaning. However, surface cleaning often only addresses the symptom, not the underlying moisture problem. Persistent mould growth behind tiles or within walls is common here and can continue to affect indoor air quality. If symptoms persist after a thorough cleaning, or if you suspect a larger hidden problem, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is warranted to identify the specific mould types and their source. This lab-based approach is the only way to confirm the extent of the issue and target remediation effectively. Considering the persistent cough in children, consulting a doctor is a prudent step to rule out other causes and address any immediate health concerns. For long-term resolution, focus on reducing humidity by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and regularly servicing your AC unit to ensure it is effectively removing moisture from the air. |
