Is shower mold dangerous for my toddler's health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the grout in the shower corner. The ventilation isn't great in there, and it’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks. I'm worried about my toddler breathing this in – is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I tackle it myself with a cleaning product this weekend?

It depends on the type of mold and your child's sensitivity. The black spots in grout are often Cladosporium or surface mildew, which are more of an irritant than a severe toxin. For a toddler, the primary risk is respiratory irritation—triggering allergy-like symptoms such as sneezing, a runny nose, or worsening asthma if present. In Dubai's high humidity, this mold will continue to proliferate without intervention.

Because it's already spreading and you have a young child, a two-step approach is wise. For immediate action, you can clean a small area this weekend with a dedicated grout mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterward. Improving ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after showers is critical.

However, if the mold returns quickly, has a musty odor, or you see it spreading to drywall or behind caulking, it indicates a deeper moisture issue. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the source and extent. They can perform lab testing to confirm the species, which is the only way to rule out more hazardous types like Stachybotrys (toxic black mold), though it is less common in bathrooms. For tenants, Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department mandates that landlords address issues that constitute a health hazard, which persistent mold can qualify as. The goal is to control the moisture source, not just clean the visible growth.
