Is shower mold urgent or can I DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but today I pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black and green mold spots underneath. It’s been so humid lately that I’m worried it’s spreading behind the tiles. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

Mold under silicone sealant in a Dubai bathroom is a common but urgent issue due to the high humidity. The musty smell indicates active microbial growth, and its presence behind the sealant suggests a moisture problem that bleach cannot solve.

Bleach is a surface-level fix. It may remove visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces, but it cannot penetrate porous materials like grout or the wall behind the tiles. The chlorine evaporates quickly, leaving behind water that can feed deeper mold roots. More critically, it does not address the underlying moisture source, so regrowth is almost certain, often worse than before.

The urgency depends on the extent. If the mold is only on the silicone surface, replacing the sealant after a thorough clean can work. However, the smell and your concern about spread behind the tiles are significant red flags. In Dubai's climate, with constant AC use creating condensation and high ambient humidity, hidden moisture is a frequent cause of structural damage and persistent health irritants like allergies and sinus congestion.

For this situation, a professional assessment is advised. They can use moisture meters to check the walls behind the tiles—a non-invasive step that verifies if the problem is deeper. If the substrate is wet, the tiles and sealant must be removed to properly dry and treat the area; otherwise, the mold will return. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also take tape lift samples to identify the mold type, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation protocol and ensuring it is handled safely.
