Is shower mold urgent to clean professionally?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black and green mold underneath. It's been so humid lately that the exhaust fan can't keep up. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach before it gets worse?

Shower mold in a Dubai apartment is a health and structural concern that should be addressed promptly. The urgency for professional cleaning depends on the extent of the growth. If the mold is only surface-level on the sealant, you can manage it yourself. However, finding it underneath the sealant suggests a deeper moisture issue that DIY methods often miss.

For the visible surface mold, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover applied with a stiff brush can be effective; bleach only removes the surface colour, not the root structure. After cleaning, run your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after each shower and wipe down wet surfaces to reduce humidity.

The critical factor is the hidden damage. Moisture has likely penetrated behind the tiles or into the wall substrate. In the UAE's high humidity, this mold will continue to grow unseen, leading to a persistent musty smell and potential air quality issues. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent using moisture meters and, if necessary, air or surface sampling to identify the species. This is the only way to ensure the moisture source is eliminated and the growth is fully remediated, preventing it from returning.
