Is small AC mold dangerous for my toddler's cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a little bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks and now we're seeing a few small black spots in the corner. My toddler plays on this floor all the time and has developed a persistent cough that won't go away. Is this definitely mold and how dangerous is it for little kids if it's just a small patch?

A small patch of black discoloration from AC leakage is almost certainly mold in Dubai's climate. The constant humidity and condensation create ideal conditions for growth. While not all mold is toxic, the presence of moisture and visible growth means spores are in the air your toddler breathes.

For a child with a persistent cough, it's a significant concern. Children are more vulnerable to mold exposure as their respiratory systems are still developing. Inhaled spores can cause chronic irritation, worsen allergies, and trigger asthma-like symptoms, which often present as a cough that lingers long after a cold is gone. The small visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg; the moisture has probably seeped into the carpet underlay and possibly the wall, creating a larger hidden reservoir.

You need to address both the symptom and the source. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent of the moisture damage and identify the mold species. This is not just about cleaning the visible spot; the AC unit itself must be inspected for the leak source and internal contamination, and the affected building materials may require proper remediation to prevent recurrence. For your toddler's health, consult a pediatrician about the cough and, in the meantime, restrict access to that area until the situation is resolved.
