Is small black mold from AC dangerous for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, I think it's from a slow leak in the AC unit. It's not huge, maybe the size of a dinner plate, but I'm worried about my family breathing it in, especially with our toddler sleeping in the next room. Is this something I can safely tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

The type of mold is the key factor. Small patches of black mold from AC condensation are common in Dubai due to the high humidity and are often less hazardous types like Cladosporium or sooty molds that primarily cause irritation—sneezing, congestion, or worsened allergies in sensitive individuals. However, any mold exposure is a greater concern for toddlers and those with respiratory conditions due to their developing systems and smaller lung capacity.

For a patch the size of a dinner plate, you can attempt to clean it yourself if the underlying leak is fixed. Bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth inside drywall. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product from a hardware store is more effective for surface growth on non-porous materials.

Crucially, you must identify and repair the source of the moisture, which is likely a clogged AC drain line or a condensation leak from the unit. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the water issue persists.

Given the proximity to your toddler's room, a professional inspection is the most prudent course of action. They can verify the mold type and ensure the leak is fully resolved, which often requires accessing the AC drip pan and drain line—a task best left to HVAC technicians. In many cases, a proper remediation involves removing and replacing the affected drywall to eradicate mold roots you cannot see.
