Is small closet mold urgent or DIY cleanable?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading, but it's not a huge area yet. How urgently do I need to get a professional to look at this, or is it something I can handle myself with a cleaner from ACE?

Small visible mold often indicates a larger hidden problem, especially in Dubai's climate. The wall facing outside suggests a possible thermal bridge or condensation issue, which is common here due to the extreme heat differential between air-conditioned interiors and the outdoor environment.
For a small area (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a diluted vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner from a hardware store. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry afterwards. However, this only addresses the surface growth, not the moisture source. The urgency depends on the moisture source. If it's simply due to poor air circulation in a cramped closet, improving ventilation and using a moisture absorber might suffice. But because it's on an exterior wall, the cause is likely condensation within the wall cavity, which is a more serious structural issue that requires professional diagnosis. Given the location and recent humidity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the root cause. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness that will cause the mold to return relentlessly if not properly resolved. DIY cleaning is a temporary fix without addressing the underlying condensation problem. |
