Is small mold in AC closet urgent to treat?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. The weird thing is, the AC vent is right there, so I thought it would be dry, but it feels a bit damp. With how humid it's been in Dubai lately, I'm worried it's mold and might spread. Is this something I need to get an expert to look at immediately, or can I try to clean it myself first?

Small visible mold in an AC closet is a definite concern that warrants immediate attention. The location is the critical factor; its proximity to the AC vent suggests a condensation issue, likely from a small gap in the duct insulation allowing cold air to hit the warm wall surface. This creates a perpetual damp spot, which is an ideal breeding ground for mold in Dubai's high humidity.

For a few small spots, you can carefully clean the surface yourself using a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. The dampness you feel confirms an active problem that DIY cleaning won't solve.

Given the climate, this situation requires a professional assessment. An expert can identify the exact cause of the condensation—often poorly insulated supply ducts—and rectify it to prevent recurrence. They can also verify the mold type and check for hidden growth within the wall cavity or ductwork, which is common in such scenarios. Leaving it untreated risks it spreading behind the wall, potentially affecting your indoor air quality and requiring a much larger remediation effort later.
