Is that greenish-black substance mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rain we had last month, I noticed a strange greenish-black substance starting to grow on the ceiling tiles in my bathroom. It smells musty and is making my kids cough more than usual. The AC has been running non-stop to try and keep it dry. Have any of you dealt with mold like this before? What did you do to fix it?

Yes, the greenish-black substance you're seeing could indeed be mold. Mold thrives in damp and humid environments which are unfortunately common after heavy rains like we experienced last month here in Dubai.

In your case, given that the AC has been running non-stop to keep it dry, it's important to address this situation carefully. The UAE has strict building codes regarding indoor air quality (IAQ) and mold remediation, so professional inspection is highly recommended.

Firstly, do not touch or disturb the affected area as this could spread spores. You should consider calling in a certified environmental consultant or a company like Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or emailing hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment. They will be able to properly identify the mold species and provide a detailed remediation plan.

In the meantime, avoid using fans or air conditioners that might spread spores around your home. Open windows if it's not too humid outside but ensure cross-ventilation isn't creating more moisture in the bathroom.

Regarding Abu Dhabi specifically, there is an increasing awareness of mold-related health issues due to our climate and building practices. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has guidelines on indoor air quality which you might want to review for additional guidance.

Always remember, safety first! If you notice any respiratory symptoms worsening or if the mold seems extensive, seek medical advice immediately as well as professional assistance.

Taking proactive steps now can prevent future issues and ensure your family's health is not compromised.
